The Old Beach House

Vanessa and Jodi have been friends as long as they could remember. Their moms were friends who met at a dance event they were competing in at the age of five. Today they’re meeting up at the old beach house their families own and would visit every summer since they were little girls. They are seventy years old now with grand-kids and kids of their own.

Jodi arrived at the beach house early. Her granddaughter dropped her off. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay without me grandma ma”? “Yes Jess, I’m just going to sit around and wait on my old friend”.

Hours had past and Vanessa still hadn’t arrived so Jodi fell asleep. Waking to a loud sound in the middle of the night it was Vanessa entering the back door. “Hey frienny”!!! Vanessa was always the vibrant friend in their friendship. “You’re sleep pretty early”. (Jodi awaking), “What time is it”? (Vanessa) “12AM”. (Jodi responded), “Girl it's way past my bedtime”. (Vanessa) “But the casinos are just starting to pop off”. “We are not spending the entire summer inside like grandmas”. “(Jodi) I’m sorry but in case you haven’t realized, we are definitely grandmas”. (Vanessa) “Well we don’t have to act like we are”. Let’s get out and do something”. (Jodi) “I’m too tired Vanessa”. “I have a better idea”. “Let’s go through old photos”. “Those were the best of times”.

(Vanessa) “Oooook, do you remember where we last placed them”? (Jodi) They’re most likely in the basement. Jodi striking a match to an old candle headed down the basement stairs. She took her time down each step holding tightly to the rails as she made it safely. Vanessa right behind her. “Girl do you remember exactly where we placed them”? (Jodi) “I know they’re in the same box our mothers placed our awards”. Suddenly a creepy cracking sound came from the door, it slammed and the candle blew out. It was so dark they both could not see themselves, let alone the stairs.

Breaking the silence, “Ok what’s our next move”, says Vanessa”? (Jodi) “I don’t know but I’m cold and tired. I’m over the whole picture thing”. (Vanessa) “We don’t need pictures to remember the past Frienny”. Remember our 16th birthday at the beach house? You were determined to have a Costume party”. I was Wonder Woman and you were Super Girl. That was the day we met our Sam and Joe. Who would have thought we would luck up and marry brothers? Two successful men at that”.

“Remember when Tommy was born? I just knew I would be the one to have a son first but the good Lord had to give me two girls before he gave me Jeff. (Jodi) You are so right! Well their age difference has definitely not stop them from being the best of friends”.

(Vanessa) We sure are blessed Frienny! All we’ve experienced together as Friends’ if the Lord decided to take us home right here in a basement stuck together, it would be the perfect ending to a beautiful friendship that we’ve shared since we were young.

“Is that light”? Grandma ma it’s me Jess. I was just checking on you again to see if you were ok. (Jodi) Well Frienny let’s get out of here and enjoy the rest of our vacation. Love you Jodi. Love you Vanessa.
